Keeping it Real: My Ita Buttrose outfit

Oh hello, I almost got through the week without dishing up an outfit post, didn’t I?

To be honest, I’ve been all outfitted-out and have been paying homage to my inner dag this week, embracing leggings and tunic dresses while getting back into my normal writing/kid taxi-ing routine.

But yesterday, I had to frock up. I was MCing a lunch at the Sunshine Coast Business Expo – a lunch where Ita Buttrose was the keynote speaker. Umm. No pressure.

I’ve long been a HUGE fan of Ita. As a young journo, I wanted to emulate her (I wrote about my early magazine dreams here). That didn’t quite happen but over the years my respect for this business woman who paved the way for other women to succeed in the very male-dominated media industry, has grown exponentially.

Ita said yesterday that when she was starting her career there were NO female role models for her to emulate. Her role models were men.

I think as women we are guilty for taking it for granted … the pioneering stuff that women of Ita’s ilk achieved for us. And I love that she did it all while still maintaining her coral lippy and nails in a sea of testosterone.

So yesterday, for my outfit, I decided to embrace the coral/orange theme and Ita-ise my outfit.

First stop was Kmart after the school run to pick up some pantyhose to cover my pasty legs. Second stop was to my hair salon for a fabulous blow dry … because if you’ve got fabulous hair you SO can get up on the same stage as Ita, can’t you?

And the dress?

When I got back from fashion week there was a parcel waiting for me containing three new frocks from Australian label Feathers*. When I saw this one, I knew it was just the thing for my date with Ita. It’s a one-size-fits-all garment so is a bit voluminous as I discovered when people posted some photos of me from the stage on Facebook. Oops. But is great with heels and if you remember to keep one hand on your hip or in a pocket for shape ;) I also wore a slip dress underneath to add extra length and prevent any undue flashings from the lectern (which I’m told is not a good speaker look?).

And, I’m sorry but I couldn’t resist … had to get a snap with Ita. She was rocking a purple jacket, black pants and her signature coral lips and nails.

Do you think I need a signature colour? If so, can it be orange?

PS. This is one thing of the many I took away from Ita’s talk yesterday: Does your current job make you happy? Ita’s test is to ask yourself if you’d still be in the job you’re doing right now if you were told you only had six months to live. What do you think? Would you?

PPS. Speaking of my orange obsession, Cheryl the blogger behind Business Chic photographed me on the last day of Fashion Week and features me on her blog today. Love her blog for workwear inspiration with a difference.

PPPS. Happy weekend to all the mums out there. I hope you get royally spoilt. I plan to be. I also know it’s a tough day for those who have lost their mums (our family included) so extra hugs if that’s you too.

Looking lovely. I was lucky enough to meet Ita too a few months ago at a function in Melbourne. She really is an inspiration!

As for the “signature colour”, if I were to say “no” I think I would be throwing a very large stone from a very large glass house.. and every single pane of glass in my glass house would be red, red, red :)

  • creativali08

love your look Nikki. :) As for Ita – what a beauty! I love her advice – fantastic. I’ve always been a believer in working in a job you love. To not work for the $$. I’m only 26 – but have always thought you work to live, not live to work! ;)

  • http://twitter.com/ShesSonic She’s Sonic

Orange could and should be your signature colour!! You look absolutely radiant, Nikki. xx

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

      I may adopt it, yes!

  • Jodie aka mummaducka

I loove orange and it looks great on you. I think black, grey and white are my signatures. Boring!

I think Ita had a lot to do with building my mother’s courage to progress in the business world and be successful.

  • http://sugercoatit.blogspot.com/ Melissa Walker Horn

That is a stand out fabulous dress!! Well done feathers.

And Ita. Well, I told you on Instagram I love me some Ita to have had her so close to home and miss it did my head in. Now to hear you were MC, well that makes it WORSE.

Now about those Gorman shoes… LOVE.

  • http://carlyfindlay.blogspot.com/ Carly Findlay

Coral and orange suit you so much Nikki. Looking gorgeous.
As for Ita – she was such a trail blazer and after seeing Paper Giants, I really admire her work ethic and the path she paved for women in the media (and in all occupations).

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Carly, she talked about being on set for Paper Giants … and about that time of her life – amazing as there were no female mentors for her at that time – they were all male!

  • Maxabella

Heeeello Ita. You rock a coral lip, Nikki. not many can say that (just you and Ita!!!) x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

      Nice company!

  • Annietopham

Nikki you look gorgeous.  I love that line of pink in that dress – it just makes it more special doesn’t it?  (I love orange too:)

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

You’re so right – just adds that something!

  • http://www.jeweldivas.com.au/ Jewel Divas Style

First, it really depends if orange suits your hair colour and skintone, not everyone can pull it off. Like me,lol.

Secondly, I’ve seen Ita wear coral for so long but personally I don’t like the colour. I have noticed the shade has changed slightly though, it used to be so bright and awful now it seems a bit softer.

Thirdly, you’re dress overall looks good, I would go for another colour, pink, blue or green maybe.

Fourthly, Ita’s wearing a quilted blazer, wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a quilted one before.

  • Sandra

Yes, orange IS your signature colour, didn’t you know? ;-)

Oh, Ms Ita…she was the Australia Day ambassador a few years ago at the Berrima celebrations and I got to meet her!!! She wore pale coral top to toe and I must admit I couldn’t string two words together, went all teeny bopper and just giggled a lot. She is so graceful and stylish <3 her.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Oh, I know … I waved my old newspaper clipping in front of her like a crazy woman :)

  • http://www.abeachcottage.com/ abeachcottage

well I have to agree with all here, orange really does rock on you x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

      Why thank-you!!

  • http://www.ladythinking.com/ Jackwafabwa @ Lady Thinking

How fabulous and glamorous is Ita! I’ve been to two events where she was a keynote speaker and I could watch her again and again. She has amazing stories to tell from her trail blazing experiences, and of course super stylish. I want to be just like Ita when I grow up.

And if i was ever asked to think of a person who ‘owned’ orange, it would be you!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Thanks Jacki – I didn’t even wear it until last season (where’s it been all my life?!). And totally agree, could listen to Ita’s stories and tips all today!

  • http://allconsuming.com.au/ allconsuming

Just fabulous. I am so all over the shop at the moment in regards to that question/proposition Ita put. All over the shop.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

I know what you mean – at the moment it’s spot on for me – but for many, many years it was far from it. I realised 4 years ago I could change that – it hasn’t been easy but it’s always been enjoyable.

  • LISA Mckenzie

Yes I do think orange looks good on you Nikki in fact I think it seems to suit most people ,you looked lovely I love your hair shussed I think you rock a curly do it suits you.
Ita Buttrose is a role model to so many women I think she is great, always have ,always will I grew up with her being in every magazine and I think she is an Aussie Icon .
Happy Mothers day to you I hope you get really spoilt and I hope I do Too!!

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

She is! We’ve been very lucky to have her as that in Australia. x

  • http://twitter.com/LUXE_by_Lulu Nicole

LOVE the outfit and really like the slip dress underneath. As I’ve said previously, I’ve never been big on orange but you are converting me :)

Have to say your hair looks fantastic here as well.  Been trying to think if I have a signature colour and I think it’s probably red… Although I do love all the jewel tones (purple, teal etc) … all with black of course – I AM a Melbourne girl :)

As for Ita’s test… 12 months ago my answer definitely would have been no but since I’ve started my business (while it is very hard work) I can honestly say I’d answer “Yes” to that question for the 1st time in my working life. x

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Isn’t that a good feeling re Ita’s test, Nicole? It’s true for me too.
And re orange – I only started wearing it last season. Who knew I’d love it so much?!

  • http://silverhuang.com/ Silver Huang

Orange IS your color. You rock all the passionate hues :)

And my answer to Ita’s Test is a definite yes, but it wasn’t always that way. I call it the deathbed test, off-putting as it is to some people to hear that. Mine was always to ask myself if I’ll be able to look back at my life on my deathbed with no regrets.

There’s a book I saw on the topic just recently, ‘The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing’ by Bronnie Ware. Haven’t read it yet, but have added it to my Wish List.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Thanks Silver – and yes, my answer is yes but it wasn’t always the case – changed all that for myself 4 years ago and I’m so glad I did!

      • http://silverhuang.com/ Silver Huang

I look forward to four years from now ;) seeing as I’m only starting this year.

I think the ultimate test is to be able to say that I’m happy NOW already, doing what I’m doing even though I’m just starting out, even with all the new entrepreneur struggles and all.

That would be the, “Am I on track at any moment?” test.

Want to guarantee happy 4 years later? Be happy now! :D

Orange is such a great colour – works in summer and brings some colour to winter and looks great on you.  I too have orange shoes which I love love love.  I don’t know that I have a signature colour … there are phases of red, green, orange, blue, purple and black.  Thanks too for you comments about Sunday … it can be a tough day … but I know they are forever in our hearts.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Yes, they are forever in our hearts but some of the marketing around Mother’s Day isn’t mindful of that. I certainly am. x

  • Vickyfinch

Orange definately is your colour. Looking gorgeous.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

      Thanks Vicky xx

I’m loving you in orange and even tried on a top myself , but haven’t quite got to purchase point yet. I do love green though, and have things from olive right through to a grassy green.
The problem with having a signature colour is that I think I’d struggle to remain faithful. I think it takes more discipline than I have not to be seduced by something “different” just because I’ve been wearing one colour a lot.

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

I tend to agree … I would be easily seduced!

  • Suz Chadwick ~ @Styliseme

I think orange looks great on you Nikki {love the Gorman coat you wore to MBFW}.  The feathers dress is lovely, but I always worry that if I don’t wear something more tailored it will make me look bigger…..

    • http://www.stylingyou.com.au/ Nikki Parkinson

Yep, me too … the fabric in this is lovely and light though so worked for me!
